Once you lay the two tresillo cowbells on top of Stubblefield's drum pattern, it really brings to mind the patterns played on agogo bells in much African music. Except, of course, the basic African patterns tend to be grouped in 3, 6 and 12, so the overlaid agogo patterns tend to emphasize the 2, 4, and 8!

Being pedantic, but one of the amazing things about the Ultramagnetic track is it DOES sample the “Funky Drummer beat” - they just didn’t use what we know as the main break - the part you’re focussing on. They use the snare roll-filled solo from the very end of part 2 of the song (on top of the main drum pattern that Paul C took from the Dee Felice Trio - by sampling just the right channel).
