Thanks for this post, it's really interesting. I'm not a huge G&S fan, but I seem to recall that there's a Gilbert & Sullivan bit that is spoken rhythmically in one of their operettas. Also, the children's songs & games from "Put Your Hand on Your Hip and Let Your Backbone Slip" (or the book "Step It Down") have a lot of rhythmic chants.
Oh, good point! There's some musical theater that uses patter, too. And kids' rhythmic chants are huge, I can't believe I forgot that. There's an excellent book by Kyra Gaunt called The Games Black Girls Play: Learning the Ropes from Double-Dutch to Hip-Hop, I need to revisit it.
