Over on MusicRadar, I wrote a tribute to the late Sly Stone through the lens of one of his funkiest hits.
It’s an excellent example of what Philip Tagg calls “one-chord changes.” Just because there isn’t any large-scale harmonic movement, doesn’t mean it isn’t harmonically interesting! The tune is also a good example of blues tonality.
Always loved how this song was just one chord. Thank you for explaining the power of this. And, the bass line is fantastic. Great tribute to Sly!
