ABBA’s songs can be very hit or miss for me but their most popular work, not matter how overplayed, are at the core just great, beautifully written pop songs.

Their songwriting is often not trivial. Seeing as you have a post referring to the chorus of “Mamma Mia”, I caught myself thinking: what even is the chorus of “Mamma Mia”? Is “yes, I’ve been broken-hearted” still chorus? Or is it a bridge surrounded by two parts of a chorus? I don’t know! But it works.

Ray is correct. ABBA isn’t like good. ABBA *IS* GREAT.

They were expert craftsmen in writing pop songs that still hold up today. Not to mention, the Royal Philharmonic did a BANGER of a program of ABBA songs that I think highlights just how great they were:

They were a singles band in an era of albums. The best ABBA album is ABBA Gold. It’s one good pop song after another.
